The four dune companies

NRG

NRG originates from the merger of all 'nuclear' activities of the companies ECN (in Petten) and KEMA (in Arnhem). NRG offers a wide range of high quality services to energy utilities, government organisations and various branches of industry - including the nuclear, financial services and medical sectors. NRG is a major producer of medical isotopes in Europe.

ECN

The energy research center ECN in the Netherlands is the central institute for energy research in our country. ECN develops technologies for a safe, efficient and environmentally sensitive supply of energy. ECN undertakes research into energy from fossile fuels, sustainable energy and other energy-related topics. ECN has a staff of about 750.

MM

Mallinckrodt Medical BV recently became part of Tyco Healthcare. Because of its innovative range of medical supplies it has become a major supplier to departments of nuclear medicine in hospitals all over the world. Many of the radio-pharmaceuticals of Tyco Healthcare have been developed by its own research group in Petten. Production facilities are situated in Petten (Netherlands) and St. Louis (United States) is the main location of the European division. The Petten site employs a staff of about 250.

GCO / JRC

The 'Gemeenschappelijk Centrum voor Onderzoek' (Joint Research Center, JRC) of the European Commission is an organisation with establishments in five member countries. In the past the name of the organisation was Euratom. In Petten research is focused on materials research, coatings and medical applications. The materials research addresses topics like materials for turbines resistent to high temperatures and coatings for the chemical industry that are corrosion resistant. Ceramic materials get a lot of attention nowadays. JRC owns the High Flux Reactor and NRG operates and maintains the facility. This research reactor is part of the production process of radio-isotopes for the medical sectors. JRC-Petten employs about 200 people from many member states of the European Union.

Synergy

The word Synergy is used to make clear that the combined efforts yield more than just the sum of the efforts. This is exactly the case with the four organisations in Petten. Knowledge and skills on nuclear and medical science and the collection of medical & nuclear facilities is unique. With the increase of the importance of nuclear medicine more and more people become aware of the potential of Petten.
